Chinese Medicine and IBS

Chinese Medicine is an ancient system that treats the body with respect. Though most Americans know something about this form of treatment, few are very knowledgeable about its range and techniques. Here are a few typical complaints and the special and time tested methods which acupuncture might employ in their treatment.

IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME
The symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) may be abdominal pain, headaches, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, fatigue and even depression. Factors that trigger this may include stress, hormone changes, powerful emotions and drugs.

SPLEEN. In Chinese acupuncture the spleen is not just an organ but a whole network of functions. In the case of IBS it is said that the Spleen's special function is to care for digestion and assimilation of food and liquid. A spleen that is not functioning properly cannot "decide" what to do with the raw materials of daily life. When this occurs "dampness" results from the undigested, unassigned raw materials in the gut. The spleen also produces blood and its inability to do this affects the blood going to the heart and the state of the emotional health in the body. Acupuncture takes a special approach to this by harmonizing and normalizing the functions of this vital organ complex. The spleen disfunction can also begin to have a domino effect on other organ groups such as the liver. Acupuncture's approach is a safe, natural adjustment of the spleen's energy allowing it to function as nature intended. In its thousands of years of history, acupuncture has developed strong strategies for just this sort of problem.
