How this Blog came to be...
About five years ago I started a midlife women’s group. My plan was to create a place where women could talk about menopause. In my acupuncture practice I had many women who were using acupuncture, herbs, and nutrition to smooth the hormonal swings so characteristic of this time. But to my surprise, once we started meeting no one wanted to talk about hot flashes, insomnia, mood swings, or any of the other symptoms that I thought would be hot topics. Instead, these women wanted to talk about grief, loneliness, depression, fear, anger, and the despair of feeling disconnected from their dreams. I was not prepared for this.
In the years that I’ve been meeting with these women we’ve become a little family. I’ve begun to suspect that midlife is a call to reconnect—with our feelings, our bodies, our purpose, our community, our family, and perhaps most importantly with our dreams. This takes time, patience, and deep listening. Most of us have spent our lives tending to the needs of others. We are not trained in the art of listening to the still small voice within that calls us back to our dreams. But I am convinced that this sweet process is the true path to healing, for our physical ills as well as our souls. How do we nourish this process of reconnection?
